The Legend of Gayasur & Lord Vishnu's Blessing
How a demon's purity transformed a landscape into the ultimate portal of ancestor liberation.
According to the Vayu Purana, there lived a powerful demon (Asura) named Gayasur. Unlike other demons, Gayasur was a devout devotee of Lord Vishnu. He performed intense penance for thousands of years. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Vishnu granted him a unique boon: whoever touched or laid eyes upon Gayasur would instantly be purified of all sins and attain liberation (Moksha).
Soon, all souls, regardless of their past karma, began ascending to heaven simply by touching Gayasur. This disrupted the cosmic laws of karma. To resolve this, Lord Brahma and the devas requested Gayasur to allow them to perform a sacred sacrifice (Yajna) on his giant body. Gayasur happily agreed and laid down, stretching his body across the landscape (which now constitutes Gaya Dham).
Why Lord Vishnu Blessed Gaya
Even after laying down, Gayasur remained unstable. To anchor him, Lord Vishnu pressed his right foot onto Gayasur's chest, stabilizing him permanently. Overwhelmed by Gayasur's absolute surrender, Lord Vishnu blessed him, declaring: "From this day on, this land will be known as Gaya Kshetra after you. Anyone who performs ancestral rites (Pind Daan and Shraddha) here will immediately liberate their ancestors, guiding them directly to Vishnu Lok. You will be remembered forever as the giver of Moksha."
Importance of Vishnupad Temple
The spot where Lord Vishnu placed his foot is the inner sanctum of the famous Vishnupad Temple. The temple houses a 40-cm footprint of Lord Vishnu stamped in basalt rock, known as Dharmasila, bordered by silver plates. Performing Shraddha right at the feet of Lord Vishnu ensures that the offering goes directly to the supreme lord, freeing ancestors from any lower realms instantly.
